GReenGoodies

This is part three of the Oklahoma City Cupcake Smackdown, which was started by Greg sometime last year. Here, Sarah continues the series with this look at Green Goodies by Tiffany. If you’d like to review previous posts in this series, you can read our reviews of Sara Sara Cupcakes and Cuppies and Joe.

When Tim asked if I would take over the cupcake smackdown series and review the latest addition to OKC’s cupcake landscape, I didn’t have to think too long about it.  Cupcakes are all the rage right now, so I’m happy to throw in my humble opinion on the small, personal-sized cakes.  Of course, when Mom found out where I was headed, she got into my car uninvited, but that’s OK.  Two opinions are always better than one.

I knew beforehand that Green Goodies is a specialty cupcake shop. They promote themselves as Oklahoma City’s first “peanut free” bakery and they make a big deal about being “organic” and meeting special dietary needs. You have a choice between organic, vegan/allergy friendly (no egg, no dairy) and gluten-free (available two days per week for walk-ins or by special order).  Soy-free and sugar free cupcakes are also available by special order. As you can see, they are going after a very specialized niche in the cupcake world.

That said, I hope you’re not thinking you don’t need to try this shop just because something might be organic or vegan.  I’m here to tell you, everything we tried was delicious.  If you didn’t know their products were organic or vegan, you wouldn’t be able to tell by the taste.

I’m really glad a shop like this has opened in our market, with so many people these days having food allergies or special dietary needs.  “Cupcakes for everyone!” is what owner Tiffany Magness told us the day of our visit.  She and manager Hallie Fitzgerald also told us that if you must be really careful about food allergies, you should see their website for a detailed Q&A section on their organic and vegan selections.  A visit or call to Tiffany would also be very valuable.

Alright, so on to the tasting. I started with the pumpkin because I am an anything-pumpkin lover, and mom started with the Green Hostess. Both of these were from the organic selection.  The Green Hostess looks like the chocolate Hostess cupcake we all grew up on, except much more delicious.  It is described as chocolate-chip chocolate cake, filled with madagascar bourbon vanilla buttercream and topped with chocolate ganache.  If Mom didn’t have anything else to eat the rest of her life, she would be happy to live on this from now on.  Yep, it was that good.  The pumpkin cupcake I had was very moist and flavorful, and I enjoyed it very much along with a frosty mug of sugar-free, organic, Hansen’s root beer ($1.50).  You do know that dessert calories are always canceled out with a diet soda pop on the side, right?  They also serve regular Hansen’s root beer, coffee and organic milk in frosty mugs.

The cupcakes we tried were so rich that we took our other samples to go.  My husband is a red velvet critic, so he tried this organic sample later that day and pronounced it blue-ribbon quality.  I tried the strawberry cake the next day and found it to still be very moist, and I enjoyed the strawberry frosting and fresh strawberry slice on top.  Dave also tried the black and white (chocolate cake with white icing).  He said it was “really chocolately and it seemed like there were little chunks of chocolate in the cake.”  He loved it.

Before I had visited Green Goodies in-store, a friend of mine from work had special-ordered some of their sugar-free chocolate cupcakes with white icing for me.  He said the day he picked them up, they were like molten chocolate lava. However, when I tried them the next day, they were a little crunchy around the outside, but they were still moist inside. All-in-all, I was pretty impressed with their sugar-free offering. Just remember that since all of their cakes are made with no preservatives or trans-fats, I would suggest enjoying them the same day you purchase them and no later than the day after.

Comparing Green Goodies to the other shops in our series is difficult since they have such a specialized niche offering. But, I will offer a little comparison on price. The cupcakes here are about the same size as Cuppies and Joes, on the small end of the cupcake scale, as opposed to the larger cakes at Sara Sara. And yet, Green Goodies’ organic cakes are priced at $3 each, with the vegan/allergy-friendly and gluten-free cakes priced at $3.25 each. So, they are quite a bit more expensive when you look at price and size together.

In my opinion, the price is worth it for the specialization they offer. If you have shopped in the organic section of the grocery store lately, you know that organic ingredients are expensive. And, if you have special dietary needs, Green Goodies offers you something you truly can’t find anywhere else.

I’m glad to see a cupcake shop open in another part of town, since Cuppies and Joe and Sara Sara are closer to the downtown area and the Paseo district.  Green Goodies does provide a comfortable atmosphere, along the lines of Cuppies, but not to the level of “stop here and read a book” that Cuppies achieves. One difference in ambiance is that some of the shabby-chic items around Green Goodies’ store front are for sale.  Items such as old aprons and mis-matched sets of old flatware.

Though the pricing is higher, I can tell you that everything we tried was yummy! I think Green Goodies is at least worth your attention, especially if you love cupcakes but have special dietary needs.  Of course, as always, we want to hear what you think about Green Goodies, so please leave us your thoughts in the comments.

I loved their ‘Halle Berry’ cupcake they had as a special one week. It was a chocolate chocolate chip cupcake with berry cream cheese frosting, AMAZING! I don’t really care for Cuppies & Joe, but like you said this place is definitely worth the 3 dollars.

*Waits for bombardment from Cuppies & Joe people.

Easy to find yourself going all Green Hornet after a Green Hostess – it’s crazy good stuff.

I had the opportunity to try some of their mini-cupcakes at a grand opening a few weeks back and was impressed.

I laugh at Matt’s comment – because I AM a fan of Cuppies & Joe because the majority of the cupcake purchases I’ve made to C&J have been greatly enjoyed. I’ve visited Sara Sara on several occasions, along with my fellow Cupcake Critic, and continue to find them mostly dry and overpriced with strangely textured icing. (Exception being the banana cupcake, which is really more like a banana bread.) The cupcakes at Saturn Grill are pretty good, too.

Having said all that, I was happy to find the Green Goodies storefront location. Yes, their prices are higher than Cuppies, but they are marketing a unique product for the OKC area. I have family and friends with peanut allergies, so this is a HUGE hit with them. My take on the cake? The Green Hostess was fabulously moist, and the icing out-of-this-world.

As much as I like the atmosphere of Cuppies and Joe, I don’t think the cupcakes are comparable to Tiffany’s. I’ve now had the vegan hostess and vegan the double chocolate(chocolate cake with chocolate icing, and I can honestly say that the double chocolate was the best cupcake i’ve ever had. Hands down.

Green Goodies is my favorite cupcake joint by far! I love that it’s organic AND they are the most moist cupcakes I have ever tasted. I would choose Green Goodues over all the other cupcake places in OKC and even over the famous Sprinkles cupcakes!! My husband even said they are the best cupcakes he has ever had…and he is hard to plese when it comes to cupcakes.

My kids have food allergies (eggs, nuts, and peanute) and greengoodies is the only place we can go to get a cupcake.
    We love greengoodies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had the organic pumpkin with cream cheese frosting and the chocolate cupcake yesterday. It was yummy as usual. I agree it’s the best cupcake joint in OKC. The Green Goodies is another one of my expensive weekly habits along with Godiva Truffles and sushi.

My office is near Green Goodies and I can’t resist the urge to get a cupcake almost every day on my lunch break. I love that, because they have healthier options and finally a vegan treat that is DELICIOUS, I don’t NEED to resist!! The “best of both worlds” cupcake is my current favorite! My friends are all starting to request cupcakes from their desks as well!! Green Goodies is amazing!!

The best in everyway. Green Goodies gets every aspect of the cupcake and bakery shoppe just right. I cannot stop thinking each and every day about the Red Velvet Cupcake, which completely deserves its name capitalized. Go there. Now.

I think that Green Goodies cupcakes are DELICIOUS!!! My favorite is the Cookies and Cream cupcake. I like every flavor I’ve tried but that is one I could eat everyday!

Being that I’m more of salt person as opposed to sweets. It takes almost everything in me not to stop by every time I pass by Green Goodies. Although, the cupcakes are the best in town I wouldn’t dare miss my daily dose of an amazing cup of JOE! Not to mention the words of wisdom from my good ole friend Tiff and a priceless remark or two from Hallie.

Green Goodies are the BEST cupcakes I’ve had!! I love Micah’s Favorite. I try to think of reasons I can stop by and pick some cupcakes up for a gift so I can get one without feeling guilty! We bought five different cupcakes one evening and passed them around taking a bite of each until they were gone. We were in heaven!

Every time I travel back to OKC, I make at minimum one stop by Green Goodies – sometimes two, though. One word: Banana.

The Green Goodies cupcakes ARE very good. I particularly have enjoyed the “Halle Berry” specialty. Where they lack in “camp out and read a book” atmosphere, they make up with pure delicatessen.

Green Goodies has the BEST Cupcakes around. They are so moist, and wonderful…my mouth waters just thinking about the cookies and cream (which is my favorite).

Green Goodies are by far the best around! We took some to the lake and between four of us, we ate a dozen in 3 days! They are all great to me1

I adore Green Goodies. Specifically the Junior Mint (I’ve only seen its glory twice as a weekly special, but each time it is mint-chocolate heaven). The chocolate chips in the chocolate cakes are like a Christmas bonus, and I generally tend to gorge myself on the frosting. In a smackdown, GG is right on the money–delightfully fresh, consistent, and never overdone (taste, culinary & decor aesthetics, employees, and overall vibe taken into account).

I had Green Goodies today and I have to say that the cupcakes there are out of this world! I honestly have never had a moister more scrumptious cupcake in my life and I have had my fair share. If you read this, you have to try them!!! On a ending note, I tried Ruth’s Sweet Justice a couple weeks ago and was shocked at how horrible my cupcake was…My friend and I threw them out after a couple bites and I LOVE sweets. I think they should have stuck with wedding cakes.

Perhaps I went on an off day – I was not all that impressed with Green Goodies. Yes, the cupcakes were moist, but I found both flavors I picked to be overpoweringly sweet. They tasted fine, but were much, much sweeter than I would have liked.
I am also a little underwhelmed by the flavor options. There were only seven types total the day I went, and they had no vegan cupcakes left. I know they close early, but to run out of something before 3pm seems like bad business to me.
