Cuppies & Joe in Oklahoma City

This is part two of Greg’s Oklahoma City Cupcake Smackdown. If you recall, we’ve had two cupcake bakeries open up here in the city in relatively short order, so we’re taking a close look at them both. Here, we’ll take a look at the newly opened Cuppies & Joe. Click here for the review of Sara Sara Cupcakes.

The first thing I’ll say about Cuppies & Joe is that you should go to Cuppies & Joe. Even if you don’t like cupcakes. Even if you don’t like Joe (but who doesn’t like Joe — I mean, what did he ever do to you?).

Why? Because Cuppies & Joe is a great place to hang out. It’s like if your friends invited you over, but instead of bedrooms, they all just decided they wanted a bunch of tables and chairs and somebody on a keyboard playing easy-going music.

The restaurant is owned and operated by the Diefenderfer family, who, I was told, just really like making cupcakes. And pies, too. You can check out their online menu to get an idea of their full selection.

At $2 a piece ($22 per dozen), the cupcakes aren’t break-the-bank expensive, but they’re also not that big. Unlike Sara Sara Cupcakes, Cuppies & Joe serves the size of cupcake your mom probably makes. But let me tell you, you only wish your mom’s cupcakes tasted this good.

While Sara Sara does a host of specialty cupcakes, Cuppies focuses on some basics with a few twists thrown in. You can have chocolate or vanilla cake with chocolate or buttercream frosting and any combination therein. The Boomerang is chocolate with mocha frosting. The Neverland is peanut butter cake with chocolate frosting.

All of them are good. And if you want something a bit different, the Horsebite (carrot cake with cream cheese frosting) and the Roman Holiday (tiramisu) are great.

But the one that knocked me off my socks was the Sassafras. Here’s a short story about it:

My brother loves Red Velvet cake. I am indifferent toward Red Velvet cake. Every year for three years, my mom forgot that my brother was the one who loved it and got me a Red Velvet cake for my birthday. Then, remembering it again, would get him the same cake for his birthday. Thus began my fiery hatred of Red Velvet cake.

The Sassafras is a Red Velvet cupcake with buttercream frosting. On paper, I should hate this thing. In reality, I’m surprised I’m not at Cuppies & Joe right now, half-naked and smearing whatever I can’t fit into my mouth all over my body. It was great.

My wife would also like to point out that if you like Starbucks, but don’t like paying crazy money for Starbucks, Cuppies & Joe has some of the best coffee around at very low prices.

My only worry for Cuppies & Joe is the parking issue, which can be hairy. There’s a few street spots out front, but they’re on a very busy stretch of 23rd street which can make for some nail-biting parallel parking. A better bet is to take the little alley around back where there’s a private parking lot available.

If you can find a place for your car, you won’t have any trouble finding a place in your stomach for some of their delicious cupcakes.

Now, where else can a guy get some cupcakes? Let me know and I’ll be there soon. Oh, and let us know what you think about Cuppies & Joe in the comments.

Cuppies and Joe has absolutely amazing cupcakes and great service. I loved the atmosphere and was surprised at how many people were there, but i guess good places don’t stay secret for long.

We visited Cuppies and Joe for the first time Friday night and have already told about two dozen people about it. The cupcakes, brownies and cookies were so good, I’m going back this week. The hot chocolate is amazing.

I went to Cuppies and Joe a few weeks ago and plan to return soon. The coffee was wonderful and the cupcakes delicious. The atmosphere is welcoming. A nice place to hang out with your friends or go on a date with your spouse.

Oh my gosh!!!! Cuppies and Joe rocks my face off! The Boomerang is divine and I’m also quite partial to the Punkin’ cupcake! Next on my list are the Sassafras and the Neverland.

It is a wonderfully pleasant place to hang out and you should go there now! Well…not so much now as it is 8.30am, but you get the idea!

My husband and I love cuppies. It is the best place for an artistic soul with a sweet tooth wich is basically the two of us. The coffee is fantastic. I reccommend the french vanilla latte!

What a darling shop… you feel like you can curl up for the afternoon, have a warm drink and read a book. (Not to mention, eat the cupcakes). The atmosphere is beyond compare.

I visited Cuppies & Joe during my holiday visit to OKC and now that I’m back in Memphis I can’t stop thinking about it! I crave “The Don” (Italian Cream) just about daily. Cuppies is definitely one of OKC’s newest local treasures.

We were home visiting my side of the family for the holidays and they said we HAD to go to Cuppies. It was incredible! I felt like I was at my own house and it was even friendly for my two year old! I recommend the purple room with the little table if you have little ones! Now I’m back in Tulsa wishing we had something similar in style and price!

Cuppies & Joe is my absolute favorite place in OKC! Not only are the drinks and desserts absolutely fabulous, the atmosphere is so artistic, unique, and welcoming-you never want to leave! If you haven’t tried it, you have to check it out-you won’t be sorry!

Cuppies and Joe is the best. Not only do they have rocking cupcakes and coffee, but their pie is better than grandmas. Seriously. You’ve got to try the apple praline pie. Parking isn’t bad unless you drive a school bus. I’ve been there a dozen times without issue, and I drive a large truck.

We’ve visited both places in the cupcake smackdown and Cuppies & Joe wins, hands down.

The atmosphere is warm and casually elegant. The night we were there they had a wonderful pianist playing softly in the front room.

The coffee, err… Joe, rather, is excellent. I had the best sugar-free hazelnut latte I have ever drank in my entire coffee-swilling career. I’ve drank in many a Starbucks over the years (all the way to the east coast, not to mention all the small, “Mom and Pop” coffee shops), and I have to say the barista at Cuppies & Joe knew their coffee. My only complaint was that the cup was so large that it was hard to hold onto. Complaint? Not really.

Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

I live in Portland, Oregon and stopped by Cuppies & Joe during an Oklahoma holiday visit. It was absolutely fabulous. The aura is warm and welcoming – it’s a great place to relax, catch up with friends, or just hang solo. The cuppies are delicious – perfectly moist with wonderful flavor and frosting. I also had these cuppies catered at my wedding before the store opened and they were a tremendous hit with the guests. C&J is definitely a great place to spend your time!

Cuppies & Joe is wonderful! I live in Western Oklahoma and have only been once but I’ve told everyone I know in Oklahoma City. It’s the perfect end to a date place or just a relazing place to hang out. It feels so homey and comfy. Not to mention the cupcakes and coffee are wonderful!!! LOVE IT!

I went to Cuppies and Joe just yesterday (for the 6th or 7th time in the first few weeks of business) and I realized the difference between Cuppies and Joe and a Starbucks Coffee: whenever I was leaving Elizabeth Diefenderfer insisted on giving me a hug before I left! I’ve never had a Starbucks bartista even shake my hand… Just saying.

Oh- and the Apple Pie they have on occasion is incredible…

Oh my gosh..I love this place. The cupcakes are delicious. And about the coffee – I talked to one of the girls and they informed me that it is Aspen coffee, from Stillwater. Aspen Coffee is an awesome little shop that has actually expanded from one to three stores in Stillwater in the past three years, they have a really great brew. It was my favorite place to meet friends or study while I was in college. I even bought their roast and made my own coffee with it and I now bring it back to the City whenever I can get back to Stillwater. I am thrilled to see that Cuppies & Joe is bringing it here, and I am even more happy to see that the small business is so far successful. Good luck!

The Cuppies were so great! I took a box home full of them, and my family devoured them! They couldn’t believe how great these were! This is definitely a place to be a regular at…it’s incredibe!

Before there was “Cuppies and Joe,” there was just the sweet Diefenderfer family baking cupcakes and pies for their friends and family just because they love people deeply and they love to bake. I have ordered their Apple Praline Pie to take to family events (which makes me instantly popular) and they are the first people I call when I need cupcakes for a party. As you can see by the comments, the cupcakes are so melt-in-your-mouth amazing that you’ll be grabbing random people on the street with a wild look in your eye just to tell someone about them. I promise you.
But the best thing about this place is that you walk in, and there is just this peaceful calm that surrounds the store. Because this is seriously one of the coolest, kindest, most loving families that you will ever meet and you can feel it the second you step through the door, you can see it in their smile, and you can taste it in their desserts. Its love, people. Love in a cupcake. Now go get some!

Cuppies and Joe is amazing! I have been there pretty much every week since it opened. It’s wonderful! The cuppies are delicious and the atmosphere is just perfect. When my sister came in town to visit that was the first place I had to take her to. I talk to everyone about Cuppies! Any time there is an event, whether at work our outside of work, I suggest catering in some cuppies.

Cuppies is the perfect place to hang out and catch up with old friends, or study listening to your ipod. My favorite cupcake is also the Sassafrass, and I love that the coffee is out in the cafe so you can get as many refills as you want…for $1.50, that’s a great deal! Thanks Diefenderfers!

  • Mike says:

C&J is the real deal. I mean, what is better then a cupcake and ice cold milk? I recommend the Vanilla Sky. Then make sure and try the Traveler. And then get a piece of fudge pie. And then get a few more cupcakes to go.

Its a great place to go after dinner, or to take a date to. Heck, its a great place to go in the middle of the day…find a couch and read a book, or surf the web. Free wifi too. Its like hanging out at your friend’s house except the food is better and they wait on you. Brillant.

Great atmosphere for all ages w/ a nook for everyone…books, wi-fi, games, yummy treats & drinks…the Chocolate Rain (Zane by me) is TO DIE FOR!!! but none pale in comparison. Cuppies and Joe is absolutely perfect. First, let’s talk about the cupcakes. They are absolutely to die for. They have the most incredible taste and clever names. My personal favorite is “The Don” (Italian Cream). The “Joe” is also delicious and incredibly fresh. If they only had great food and drink they would be a winner – but the cafe is the most comfortable and relaxing spot in OKC. They have a vintage-style decor with lots of comfy couches and chairs. My personal favorite spot is “The Book Nook” that has pages of Little Women lining the walls. If you haven’t tasted a cuppie – go get one! If you have, I know you are wanting more.

Everyone is telling everyone how C&J has the best desserts and coffee in OKC!! The atmosphere is so quaint and comfortable. The service was excellent and you can expect a smile every time you go. I need to make a trip back to this place! They’ve done amazing things as far as decor goes (my god, how comfy and welcoming it is!!), and it not only looks, but feels like a place to lounge around with friends and enjoy coffee and cupcakes. I was overjoyed to see a topnotch espresso machine actually manned (or, girled?) by a knowledgeable barista! They really put forth the effort into providing quality coffee drinks to accompany those delightful cupcakes. Yes, they are smaller than SaraSara, but also a third less in price. I found C&J’s cupcakes to be moist and incredibly flavorful. I know red velvet is fairly “boring” as far as flavors go, but it was definitely my favorite. When stacked against each other C&J blows SaraSara out of the water. I wish them both the best in the future, but C&J has definitely set themselves up for success in all areas (location, decor, friendly staff, beverages, and superior cupcakes).

Ok, so I’ve dropped in a few times before and tasted the cupcakes, but I’ve never visited to hang out. Today, I took my seven year old and we went up for a treat and a game of Monopoly. That’s right, we brought our own Monopoly game which he loves to play (and he usually wins). Anyway, what a perfect place to hang out. We each got a cupcake, I got some tea, and we found a nice, roomy table that’s perfect for board games. Fun times.

The place was lively the entire time we were there. There were people in and out of the place and moving through the line constantly. This was on a Saturday afternoon. This place has a lot of promise and I look forward to seeing how things continue to grow.

You can’t say too many good things about the Diefenderfer family. Anything they are involved in is always top notch. It doesn’t surprise me that Cuppies and Joe is receiving great reviews. I’ve had the privilege of indulging in cupcakes, pies and an occasional dinner prepared by Peggy. What a great chef. I can truly say, as a member of “the five familys” (inside joke) that if you want great cupcakes, coffee and atmosphere; try Cuppies and Joe. Congratulations Bob, Peggy and the girls.

The apparent stuffing of the comment box here is a little off-putting. Perhaps the management of C&J mobilized their friends and family to flood this site?

But with that said, they are indeed excellent cupcakes. The simple vanilla/vanilla cupcake (Vanilla Sky) is a pure delight. Good coffee too.

Re: Anon Reader Dude. I, too, get the feeling that a lot of friends of the restaurant’s owners have stopped by to praise Cuppies & Joe. As the reviewer, I can say that I met them when I first visited and, while they are very nice, my review is based on the cupcakes and coffee. Even if there is some “comment stuffing,” I think the general opinion is right — Cuppies is a nice place to hang out with great cupcakes, affordable coffee and a pleasant atmosphere.

I’m a strawberry fan and I’ve only had 1 other cupcake better than the one I had here… and I have to say that cause my mother made the other one!

The first time I went there on my daughter’s recommendation, they were OUT of cuppies! Sigh. I hung around and drank tea and did enjoy myself. They promised more in an hour, but I had to leave.
The second time I tried and was able to drink tea AND eat a cuppie! Very good and I will be back.
I will say they are so busy that finding a hidey hole was not easy, but patience will out!!

I’ve been to Cuppies & Joe a few times now. I had also tried SaraSara’s. The first time I tried SaraSara’s I was dissapointed. So I decided to try Cuppies & Joe. Again, I was dissapointed. So, I tried Cuppies & Joe a 2nd time. This time they were just as dry and stale tasting as the first. I actually bought a dozen of them to take to a friend’s house and we ended up throwing them out. They were disgusting! So..I tried SaraSara’s again…and they have gotten the kinks out and are nothing short of amazing. Cuppies & Joe is awful and if you aren’t stary eyed by the fact that you know the owners, then be true to yourself and try SaraSara’s again….

  • Greg says:
    March 31st, 2009 at 7:09 am

Wow, Sarah, I have to disagree with you. I don’t know the owners personally, but I loved Cuppies and Joe. I agree that Sara Sara has improved — I have really enjoyed my last couple of visits — but I’ve never had anything less than a stellar cupcake at Cuppies and Joe. Sorry your experience wasn’t as great, but I think it’s unfair to criticize all fans of the shop as people blinded by friendship.

I stopped by Cuppies and Joe for the first time this weekend, after getting a request to pick up some cupcakes on the way to NW OKC. I missed it going west on NW 23rd, but came back and found it after calling them–it’s the third house east of Shartel on the north side of the street, in the Paseo District. It’s a homey little place, with plenty of tables and chairs to relax in. I noticed a couple of folks taking advantage of the Wi-Fi and punching away on laptops. The proprietors were very friendly, and answered all my questions. I was intrigued to learn that the purchase limit is six cupcakes–any more constitutes a Special Order, and they need 24 hours in advance. I’d recommend visiting with a few friends and each of you order six to go. Their coffee is EXCELLENT, whether you try their regular choice or exotic. I’m one of those who drinks at least eight cups per day and believes that life’s too short to drink lousy java! Of the cake selections, I particularly enjoyed “the Don”, the “Mary Poppins” (stwawberry-iced strawberry with pieces of berry), and the “Horse Bites” (carrot cake). If you like chocolate (and I do), they have really good chocolate ones too–I just wanted to branch out. Be prepared to parallel park, and watch your step if you’re disabled, like I am–there are rather high metal steps in front where one could trip. That’s not doing to deter me from going back, though–the “Cuppies and Joe” are delicious!!

popped in yesterday and had a lovely passion iced tea and a sassafras cupcake. very affordable and a lovely location (although a group playing games was horrifically loud). the cupcake was yummy and didn’t have the ‘red’ taste that too much dye affords but the icing was yuck. it had separated and ran – i didn’t think that would necessarily effect the taste but the texture was that of tapioca pudding. the girl behind the counter explained that it was due to the weather which is ever changing but has been very humid. i’ll try it again – even the sassafras – but was a bit disappointed.

I love Cuppies & Joe. I am not a coffee drinker, so I haven’t tried their beverages, but I have heard great comments about the frozen hot chocolate. My favorites are vanilla sky and the dom. When I am out that way I would love to take orders from my whole office and pick up a mix & match dozen but they are adamant about only selling you 6 cupcakes unless you call ahead. You don’t get a price break if you order more, so it’s frustrating that I can’t buy my six and 5 more off the guy ahead of me that only bought one. Even though their policies drive me crazy, I love their cupcakes.

I definitely think C&J is having there church members bombard this message board. The atmosphere is wonderful and you can meet a lot of people, but honestly the cupcakes are just so so. My wife and I have been twice and got an assortment of a dozen cupcakes. We have shared them with our family members and gotten the same response, they’re just ok. I have found them abit dry and un-flavorful, parking is a pain and I have nearly gotten hit by reckless patrons trying to get in or out of parking onto 23rd. maybe people are just trying to find a cute place to rave about, unfortunately this isn’t it. Better luck next time, I guess I can try Sara Sara and see if the results are different.

Cuppies & Joe has a great atmosphere but the cupcakes are small. I can make more impressive cupcakes at home. Also their hours or operation are sporadic. Call before you go because you never know when they may be closed.

So I went here Thursday night before my wisdom teeth surgery the next morning. My fiancee and I took 4 home. The neverland, the chocolate rain, vanilla sky, and mint to be together. I was so exctied to try this place especially after my not-so-great experience at Sara Sara but I wasn’t all that impressed here either. Now, the place its self was, like everyone said, adorable. Great atmosphere and decor. I LOVED the neverland…would go back to get it alone, but the “mint to be together” (and I LOVE chocolate and mint) was almsot gross. The consistency of the frosting and the taste were way to close to colgate for me to enjoy. The other 2 (chocolate rain and vanilla sky) were fine, but nothing to scream about. I feel like they deserve another chance though, unlike Sara Sara. I am going to try and go when I can get the sassafrass. Anyways…good passion fruit iced tea.

The cupcakes are just average, and inside is extremely small. What I disliked most about this place was the parking area. All in all, it’s a cute average cupcake place, but nothing spectacular.

This is one of the great new hangouts in OKC. I usually go there on the weekends and when I’m in the Paseo area as well. I have tried many of the cupcakes but the carrot cake is my fav. Also, they make a great caramel latte and the frozen hot chocolate is awesome as well.

The Don is amazing…what’s in it? Tastes like mascarpone to me. Awesome!

I think this place has to be affiliated with a Church or something.

On the rare occassion that I’m driving by 23rd on a Friday or Saturday night, they always appear to be packed with youth-group types, and I always catch myself thinking “this has to be a church thing”. Throw in this extremely conspicuous message box stuffing, and it seems pretty clear to me.

So which mega-church is it? It’s not like it would ever impact my decision to patronize the place, but I’m curious nonetheless.
