Sauced: great hang-out, less-than-memorable food.

Sauced in Oklahoma City

Let’s start off by clarifying that we — myself, Sarah and Tim — went to Sauced in February (yes, it’s taken us that long to publish this review). We know that February isn’t the greatest month for sitting out in the ample patio, drinking a beer and eating a slice. So, if that’s what the charm of Sauced is really about (and we suspect it is), we clearly missed out.

But at the same time, a restaurant can’t be completely about atmosphere and experience. They do, after all, serve food as well, and the the food just didn’t strike us as all that memorable.

Now, it’s not the worst thing in the world for food to be “OK.” The worst thing is when it out-and-out sucks and it’s expensive. The food at Sauced does not out-and-out suck and is maybe only a little expensive, so it doesn’t have everything going against it — it just doesn’t have that much going for it.

Sauced is fine. It’s OK. It’s good. The food is just not memorable. And that’s unfortunate for a place that has so much going for it in the “experience” department.

The pizza ($16.50 for cheese plus $1.50 per topping) — we split a half-pepperoni and sausage and half-garlic, mushrooms and brocolli pie — was on the dry side. It’s a big pie with a very thin crust, but that crust was quite bland and there was very little sauce on it (ironic, considering the name of the restaurant). We did appreciate the availability of some unique toppings, like broccoli and carrots, but overall, it just fell short. That, plus the hefty price tag, make this a poor pizza value in our opinion.

You might see the large diameter of the pizza as improving the value, but the super-thin crust means that, even at a large size, it’s not very filling. The three of us easily finished every last bite of our large (which cost $21) and could have had more. Put it all together and it’s average pizza at a pretty substantial price.

We also tried the hummus and chips appetizer ($3.10). It wasn’t anything to write home about, either. These were ballpark-style tortilla chips and some pretty bland hummus with a little seasoning tossed on. Frankly, I didn’t taste anything.

The one thing I did have that was great was the coffee and I’d gladly get another cup of that. Again, this adds to the appeal as a hang-out or coffee shop as opposed to a dining establishment.

If I lived in or near the Paseo, I would go to Sauced because it’s a neighborhood kind of place. I like the funky art on the walls. I like that it has a great beer list and a place to sit outside. But I don’t live right there and I don’t know that Sauced has enough to pull me back for another taste. A restaurant needs to make that first impression count and while I wouldn’t necessarily ward anyone away from Sauced, I am not going to push people in that direction.

I have a feeling we’ll get some pretty spirited comments on this one. Please, let us know what you think in the comments, whether you agree or disagree with our review.

I agree with everything you said! Great hang out with not so great food!

I made the mistake of taking outing of towners (for the atmosphere) and they were not thrilled afterwards! Plus, even worse is that the service is never up to par because the workers often act as though they are in la la land! Not cool for food, but good for chillin’!

I think they should get their act together, because some competition is a brewin’ in okc! Ha ha….it’s ambience is not going to be enough to carry it on forever!

your review is spot on unfortunately…the first time we went was in summer, a class reunion was going on and if we wanted to order, it would be at least an hour for pie, we were starving and headed to Hideaway (after considering swiping a slice or two from the reunion)…second time was last winter, had to eat inside, the pizza was just ok. It could be such a cool place, and I do live close, but haven’t had the desire to return. The Wedge is much better joint in the hood in my humble opinion.

Agreed! There was a time when the prices weren’t so flipping high. I believe it was before the first time Sauced experienced it’s first Paseo Arts Fest. They hiked up the price during the fest and afterwards never brought them back down. The demographics of patrons seems to have changed as well to match that of how Stephanie describes the servers.

I have spent a lot of time at Sauced over the past year and I am sad to say it used to have excellent food. I used to crave the We Three Cheese pizza and would order it for take out all the time. I still like Sauced as a place to grab a beer and eat a slice in the evening, but the craving has gone. A lot of people say it is a matter of who is making the food, but after 4 failed attempts at resurrecting the greatness that was the We Three Cheese I crave no more.

I agree with all of you- I have had to go to Sauced many times because friends want to go there- but I hate spending my money on the food because it is not great. Nearly every time I get a slice of pizza, it is totally burned on the bottom, and a few times I got plain cheese pizza and it tasted like chemicals, as though they made it on a bleach drenched counter. The hummus is dry and not worth it, and the chips are cheap tasting, as well as the jar salsa, but it is pretty much the cheapest thing on the menu. The 2 times I had coffee, it tasted burned and bitter, but I have only gotten it in the evening. It seems like nothing is really consistant there besides the burned pizza and bland humus. If anyone ever drags me there again, I’ll stick with ordering just a beer.

I think you all are giving Sauced a bad wrap. They never have advertised as anything more than they are. They are a great neighborhood restaurant with really good food, great salads, and lots of other good stuff. The whole forgettable food comment is just kind of unkind. They have changed the demographics of the neighborhood and made the paseo a safe place to hang out.

  • Tim says:
    May 7th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

@Gabby, I appreciate your comment and you know what? I agree with you on the use of the word “forgettable.” The headline is something I came up with. It wasn’t Greg’s doing, and it’s actually something that kind of bothered me ever since I posted it. “Forgettable” just has a really negative connotation that’s a little too strong for what we’re saying. Your comment has motivated me to change the headline to something a little softer but with the same message.

I do feel like the review is fair, though. And, your opinion is equally valid and I’m glad you shared it. I hope everyone else will let us know what they think as well.

  • Greg says:

I’ll be honest — I thought Tim’s word choice was fine. If anything, forgettable seems generous, because I wish I could forget how disappointed I was. Sauced had a great rep, but my visit turned up only two positives — the atmosphere and the coffee. It seems like most other people largely agree that Sauced is lacking.

To put a finer point on it, a restaurant can do many things: bring a fun vibe, make a place feel safer, etc. But the one thing a restaurant should always do, first and foremost, is provide food that customers want to eat. Without great food, there is no great restaurant.

I’m sorry but I think that you are ALL missing the point of SAUCED. It is a place to hang out and get some coffee, a slice of pizza, and a great conversation. It isn’t a sit down restaurant served with a three course meal!!! OF COURSE the food isn’t going to be wonderful, but I am at SAUCED at least twice a week and no one could finish a whole pizza pie to themselves, not even with three or four people, and a slice of pizza is only 3.50 and it fills every person I know. The food isn’t what brings people to SAUCED anyways. It is a place where a mix of people can gather and have a really awesome time and perhaps listen to some rockin’ music or talk to a stranger about art or “the great meaning of life”. Anyone who doesn’t appreciate SAUCED for what it is probably shouldn’t go there anyways and is too stuck up for a place like SAUCED.

The Paseo has completely turned around and become a great up and coming area that brings business to the artists, musicians, and theatre groups of the area. SAUCED has a lot to do with the demographic that has been brought to this area. Thank goodness that we have a place like this in Oklahoma now.

Anyone who doesn’t get Sauced hasn’t been on the road, and possibly has never been out of their suburb. The pizza is a wonderfully simple and delicious new york style, and let me tell you, it has improved remarkably over the last year. The environment is constantly improving and the people there are top notch. If you like tolerance amongst starkly different types of people then you’ll love how the vastly different group that frequent sauced not only accept each other, but thrive. Very rarely does a place in Oklahoma City not only bring out TRUE artists, musicians, students, bike gangs, doctors, and lawyers, but even more rarely does an Okc establishment give them a platform to showcase their ability and network for their needs. The musicians they bring in are amazing (and not all local), the owners care about the community, the people resolve any differences by eating pie instead of snarling, and it is bring life back into what was very nearly a faux art community just years ago. Without sauced the Paseo would be just another neighborhood. We are lucky to have it, and if you disagree I suggest giving it one more shot, or finding another pizza place. There are plenty of them. -pego

First of all, any negative review on here is going to generate a large amount of comments as people are quick to defend “their” place of choice and subsequently other come out in favor of the reviewer. I didn’t want to throw my near-worthless internet opinion out here, but I do have a different take on things.

Both the reviewer and most of the comments center around the positive quality of the atmosphere with opinions being mixed on the quality of food. I for one, absolutely love the food, coffee, and beer, and loathe the atmosphere. As you would find with most hipster places, there is a smug, holier than though air about the place which has been reflected in much of the retort to the quasi-negative review. This can be sen in the “YOURSAUCED” twitter account mocking EarAroundOKC for calling Paprika a spice and not a garnish and the comment above that “…anyone who doesn’t appreciate SAUCED for what it is probably shouldn’t go there anyways and is too stuck up for a place like SAUCED.” Maybe it’s because I’m a well-off yuppie

Given that, I really, really like the food here so I keep coming back. I love a little bit of carbon on the bottom of my crisp pizza crust mixed with just barely melted cheese over crumbled sausage, garlic, green peppers, and onions (the self-titled “unkissable special”), and a portion of two slices is enough to make me very full but not feel like I had gorged myself. The beer selection is wonderfully unique with numerous specialty imports and my favorite domestic standby, Pabst Blue Ribbon. The coffee is excellent, although a couple times I have been there I have had cups with the bitterness that corresponds to a slightly burnt or left out pot, but that was during VERY low volume times.

I have brought numerous out of town friends there who did enjoy the pizza to varying degrees, but for me it is excellent. A gentleman from New Hampshire, who is walking across the country, stayed at my place a few days ago. I took him to Sauced and he proclaimed it the best New York Style pizza he’s had off the of East Coast.

Other food I have had there ranged from excellent (salads) to mediocre (hummus plate), but I will continue to go back for the pizza and beer, not the atmosphere or prices.

different people work there… different people make pizza differently. i worked there sometimes and made my pizza different than everyone else… you can’t make everyone happy… but i’ll tell you this… SAUCED is the greatest place i’ve ever been…

i can’t believe a bunch of adults are complaining about a pizza place they’ve been to one time…

and it sounds like it was pretty memorable to me… you remembered how “OK” the pizza was. if you don’t like thin crust… go somewhere else…

    i’m in love with SAUCED.

I can understand the review about the elitist atmosphere, but you don’t have to let that affect you. There are plenty of other places to sit other than the big table on the southeast side of the entrance. Sauced’s support on the indie music scene is enough reason to eat there every day. The beer is good. The pizza is pizza, but individualized and often creative. Sitting outside with a beer, pizza, and music is the perfect scene for a sunny day…just walk past the ones that think they own the place and you will be perfectly happy visiting.

Although I am a frequent patron of Suaced, I do have to agree with the review. I go to Sauced to hang out, if I’m hungry I might eat a slice. But the food has really gone downhill since they opened. Which is disappointing. I love hanging out there, especially in the summer, with a mimosa. The drink prices have consistantly gone up, but hey everyone’s gotta make a buck. It just means that I won’t be drinking there as often as I used to.

Sauced is a great place to hang out. I’ve had no problems with the people who’ve worked there over the years. But personally, the pizza (which they are known for), is lacking. I’m sure all these comments will upset a few people, but I do hope that it motivates Sauced to step up to the plate (again). I have faith that Sauced pizza will ressurect from the dead :) but until then, I’ll stick with the mimosas.

I always regulared Flip’s…I loved the patio and always ordered a greek salad and a sausage pizza; however, one day a friend of mine named Junior stopped by my table (which consisted of 6 other people ranging from professionals to students), and told us that if it was a slice and some beer we desired then we should head to Sauced with him…we did! We ordered a round of beer and a whole pie (which ending up being more than enough to fill my entire group) and headed to the patio…the pizza was incredible, the service was friendly and the atomosphere was amazing. We arrived at 2pm and ended up staying until around 8pm…it was more than a dining experience it was a like a completely different way of life. Soon after our visit to Sauced, I decided to move to Paseo, fell in love with Junior and now frequent the establishment quite often. If your looking for a delicious new york style pizza and a vacation from the norm…Sauced would be my recommedation!!!

I really hate when people use internet armies to send a message so heres some truth! Sauced is a wonderful place to sit outside, drink beer, and have some pizza. I dont recall any domestic beer being served there and two slices of our pizza were snatched up by some transients when we went to order more beer. They were fake transients though because they picked the pepperonis and sausage off before they made off. I will return though!

I’ve been to Sauced a few times, and have always had a great time. 2 slices of their pie fill me up, and i can eat like it’s going out of style.

For the quality and variety of pizza they offer, along with beer, wine, coffee, etc… I’d say you really can’t beat Sauced. Plus the atmosphere and music they have is awesome.

First off let me say I don’t work in or for the Paseo, I just visit on the weekend to stuff my pie hole and drink beer. Been going to Sauced on and off for many years and like any other restaurant there have been “bad days” where things just didn’t work well. Heck, even Galileo’s up the street has had days like that. Most memorable was when half the evening shift just didn’t show up. There were folks griping about slow service but after getting tired of listening to the gripes I explained the situation they clued it. Tazz and the others are correct, the kitchen staff does make a difference. I’ve done kitchen work before (LaPizza for those that remember the place) and unless your running a production line like McDonalds, variation is inevitable. The main point is if your food is not good you should take it in and let them know. It might be something they are unaware of like skunked beer from a bad shipment. Remember that cooking pizza takes time and if your behind others it can take quite a while. Sauced doesn’t have huge ovens or roller ovens, they are a small restaurant that like any other can get easily overwhelmed. I’ll add one more thing. Individual taste and preference varies so what one person thinks is awesome, the other may think sucks. Personally I don’t like thick crust since carbs are low on my list. My little test is if the pizza will stay flat while held up by one edge, it’s cooked properly. :) Like I said, personal taste. Cheers, DougW, OKC

I like Sauced. No- I love Sauced with all my heart. When I went there the very first time I had the best slice of pineapple pizza I’ve ever tasted. Soon after I was back for more. Coming round for a slice and bringing friends, I slowly got to know the owners and staff. When I started going to school in OKC (despite living in midwest city and not having a car) they were happy to let me hang out and wait until I could arrange a ride every evening, even days I didn’t have any money to support them.

That all started two years ago, and today?
Well, just head up there virtually any day and say hi to me. If I want a slice? You can bet I’ll be there. If I want a chai? You can REALLY bet I’ll be there. Even if I’m just looking for a way to start my Friday night? Know that I’ll be up there to say hi to my friends or make some new ones.

So come out, buy a slice, and make friends with some strangers. Maybe I’ll be able to show you the Sauced I love, not the Sauced this review portrayed.

This was a good, objective review that sums up my own view of Sauced — cool scene, open late, good beer selection, sometimes flaky service, unmemorable pizza. Kudos to Greg and the EAOKC staff.

Some folks in this comments thread seem to misapprehend the purpose of this site. E.g., commenter RK writes: “If you don’t like the food or the place I see no reason to complain about it just eat somewhere else!”

Um, the reason to complain about it is that this is a restaurant review site.

I personally think the Pizza was pretty good. One reason I like it is that it seems healthier than most other pizza places. They don’t dump tons of cheese and sauce on it, and the topping they provide do seem very fresh. With that said, the staff is at best aloof. Sometimes the place doesn’t seem like the cleanest place either.

Considering the depth of the review and the consistency of the two camps of the responses, not sure this one will ever make my list for the food, but it does have the ring of a hang joint.

Places to chill are great, everyone needs such a place, or two or three. Long ago, for me it was two places in Norman, one for its food, the other for adult companionship sans the undergradish flack smack that is overbearing in so many college town establishments. These days I’m more homebody than anything.

Sauced sounds like a place to meet up your friends, or even make some new ones, and maybe get a snack so you can hang with them a bit longer since you’re already there.

That’s all well and good, and if it can survive, even thrive, on that basis, more power to its peeps and its owners.

But it does seem like the food is almost an afterthought, just sort of there if you’re not overly eager to enjoy something more tasty. Again though, if the company your in is more comforting than a happy mouth and tummy, ain’t nutthin’ wrong with that at all.

But yeah, review sites are review sites, and cheerleader sites are cheerleader site. I like that this one is in fact a review site. Too many aren’t.

Well…I almost agree about your review – except *I* don’t find it to be a particularly nice hang out. The staff is so disinterested in customers as to be downright rude, they never answer their phone, and every time I’ve ordered pizza they’ve been out of at least one or two toppings (early on in the evening that’s hard to believe, but it happens constantly). I do actually live in the Paseo, but I still can’t drag myself to Sauced unless I’ve got a serious hankering for a thin crust pizza and don’t want to drive. I’ve only tried the hummus (aside from the pizza) and had the same conclusion about the bland hummus. How hard is it to make hummus? Not hard at all, I make it all the time at home and it’s exploding with more flavor than Sauced can apparently muster up.

I would like to try their coffee drinks, or something else from the menu, but I just can’t bring myself to go in there. Out of the five or so times I’ve gotten pizza, three of those included trips inside (because they *never* answer the phone, and after an experiment with a cell phone, it’s because it apparently doesn’t ring) to order (takes the convenience out of a pick up order), and *all* included terrible staff. Every time I’ve been in there I’ve been made to feel (through glares or being ignored for five minutes while the cashier chatted with a non-paying “customer”) like I’m pestering them for stuff. Unlike some folks in this area, I don’t care if people in the customer service industry just coast by with the “bare minimum” amount of service, I don’t expect all smiles and life stories while getting my ass kissed – all I want is to be waited on promptly, and not treated rudely because I dared step foot into a *restaurant* and ordered food. Sauced is mostly a place for the owner to have friends over, and anyone not falling into that category is a nuisance. Next time you’re in the Paseo and want pizza, check out Galileo Bar and Grill. Their five cheese pizza is amazing, and comes without attitude.

The first time I ate here (over a year ago) I thought the pizza was amazing (and pretty cheap). As I live pretty close to the area, I frequented Sauced a few more times. Found the inside atmosphere to be a little annoying what with all the hipsters and neo-hippies (and the staff borders on unresponsive) but the pizza was great–at first. I was willing to cut the clientele/staff a break as I figured my short-haired, preppy visage was just getting me the same treatment that they receive in other establishments, but the past few times I’ve been there the price seems a little higher (although it could be my imagination) and the pizza has been increasingly dry and bland. My last slice (onion and sausage) had a decent amount of toppings but little sauce and almost no cheese.

When I get the need for pizza I think I’ll just drive a little further north and hit up Falcone’s.

One good note–it’s one of the few places I can find in OKC (excluding Taco Bell/breakfast places/etc) that will serve food right up until 2am.

I can’t believe all the mediocre reviews of Sauced, but I must agree – people are going into Sauced looking for a “Wedge” type experience or something like Hideaway. That’d be like going into a Starbucks looking for a good cup of coffee. It’s simply a filler to add to great conversation.

That being said, I really do love the pizza here, and I’ve never thought of it as expensive. Pizza by the slice is in the ballpark of $3.50 plus a quarter or two for toppings, so I can easily grab lunch for $5 or less. Sure, I’ve had my fair share of burned pizza, but all the other elements that go into Sauced make up for it.

I guess that’s where I’m going. Sauced is a social experience, not a culinary masterpiece.

Here’s the real deal: this is a food website & even though I am a long time fan of all things Sauced I consider it to be a fair & accurate review.
That being said, if this were a “who has done what for there community” website Sauced would be a top story about a 5-star rated owner & what he will do to help those around him.
I have counted on Ed to provide free to at-cost pizza for my events many times & he has never said no. I have had $1 slices at Barb H’s “rock n roll garage sales” that hit the spot. Community support wise Ed is The Man. SO what his pizza is a little bland? Try some of the other dishes & drink The Larva, a coffee bev named after a friend of mine.
Also, if you have a band that needs a place to be seen by the in-scene or you want to see a low-dough show Sauced is your venue. Check ‘em out. You can eat before you go…

This is a great little hang out on a Friday or Saturday night. The food is pretty good, but it’s the company that really makes this place.

i tried sauced with a buddy early on and haven’t been back since. the pie was huge, but there wasn’t anything about it that influenced me to return. i’ve had pizza on the street on nyc and sauced isn’t compareable to the pizza i had. but i’m sure you can get boring pizza in nyc.

I have to agree that the food is pretty worthless. Ate there twice. Both times, the crust was completely burnt and the cheese tasted stale (didn’t know cheese could taste stale, but Sauced proved me wrong). But I do see it as a fun hangout. Go there occasionally, but surely not to eat. My gripe is, why even serve food if its going to be bad? Its like they just don’t care. I even find it insulting, to me it says “well we’re so cool that we don’t care what you think of our food”. Ambiance and crowd is only half the battle.

I would love to hang out there more often, and I have friends who hang out there, but I’d much rather hang out at a place that’s trendy AND has great food, like The Wedge. If Sauced actually tried to improve their pizza, I think only good things could come of it.

For the most part I agree that Sauced has a great atmosphere and the food is a little overpriced. However I wouldn’t say its just OK. I guess it depends on what style of pizza you like – thin crust, pan crust, etc. The house salads are awesome, btw.

OK, I ate there recently after a hiatus, and the pizza at Sauced really did fail pretty hard.

We ordered toppings — just a couple standard pizza toppings, nothing unusual — and we got (for our $3.75-$4.00 per slice) a thin cooked crust, a loose pile of tepid, not very cooked toppings, and some threads of room-temp, very unappealing, dead-white, barely melted cheese on top.

Sorry, even a NY style pizza is supposed to be cooked on top. A little golden browning of the cheese is a GOOD thing. Cooked food is appetizing, you know?

It’s a shame, because their sauce is tasty. (I wish they used more of it.)

They need to get a new oven and/or learn to cook pizza in a more careful and professional manner. If you have to eat here, it might help to stick to a plain cheese slice.

I’ve had several friends in my two years living in OKC that have been nuts about this place. I’ve been several times, and always come away feeling the same: the pizza is some of the worst I’ve had, and the ‘great atmosphere’ tries way too hard to be the cool, hipster place to hang out. I’m sure the owner is a great guy, but the service is always average, at best. I will say that it’s a fun, intimate venue to catch a live show, but that’s about it.

I think JerzeeGrlinOK said it best: “I even find it insulting, to me it says ‘well we’re so cool that we don’t care what you think of our food.’” If that’s your thing, have at it. Personally, there are so many places in OKC with better atmosphere, friendly service, and far better food, I think I’ll pass.

I thought the food was delicious. I love their crust, it doesn’t overpower the rest of the food. And it taste fresh.

Wow, I’m glad I went there before reading this article…. You guys are really harsh. You make it seem like Cici’s is better or something. The only way for the food to improve at any restaurant is to tell the person who made your food. If your pizza wasn’t cooked like you want it, send it back. Nicely, granted. I was a waitress in my younger days … cooks are generally happy to correct things if you are polite about it.

I went about a month ago and my pizza was really good. Huge as well. We took half of it home and it was yummy as leftovers.

The guy at the counter was really friendly, the atmosphere is great. The building is really interesting. Has a groovy eclectic feel like a coffee shop, they also made me a tasty Italian soda. The have a great outdoor patio with a fire pit (granted a bit too chilly outside when I went). I think they host poetry occasionally.

Is it a 5 star gourmet restaurant? No. But it is tasty food in the Paseo run by local people. I’ll certainly be going again.

Please tell us what you think.
